WBSA's exciting 2025 Spring Conference and Retreat will be held from Tuesday, April 29th to Friday, May 2nd. This year's coastal theme, Rising Tides, is focused on collaborating to elevate the admissions process. Spend a beautiful week in the resort village of Carlsbad, California while honing your enrollment management skills, building connections with other admission professionals, and enjoy new and exciting perspectives on our profession.

Day 1

Sign over Carlsbad Boulevard

Join us as we kick things off with an opening reception at the Carlsbad Inn and Beach Resort. Enjoy dinner on your own or take in a spectacular sunset at our cozy beachside hotel.

Day 2

Tower at Tamarack Surf Beach

Start off the day with breakfast and official opening of the conference and retreat, engage in workshops, and take in lunch on the terrace before afternoon activities on the beach.

Day 3

We'll head to member school Army and Navy Academy for a campus tour and interactive workshops. Afterward, we'll hold a fun-filled closing reception and awards ceremony to celebrate our admission season!

Speakers

Drew Cocco

Drew is the Vice President of Client Experience at Clarity, and focuses on ensuring that school users have the training, resources, and support they need to make the most of Clarity's Financial Aid, Contracts, and Billing software products. Before joining Clarity, Drew spent the first 14 years of his career in independent schools as a Teacher, Coach, and Director of Enrollment/Financial Aid. A spreadsheet nerd at heart, he regularly publishes and presents on how to use data to optimize enrollment and financial aid strategies. Based outside of Philadelphia with his wife and three children, he enjoys fishing, carpentry, and playing music in his spare time.

Scott Delleville

Scott Delleville brings over 18 years of experience as a trusted advisor for K-12 boarding schools worldwide. His expertise lies in the realms of new business development, leading teams and learning from schools about their tailored needs around the world.

Scott is also recognized as a subject matter expert in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI having led several client-focused sessions around the world on Admissions and AI.  His deep knowledge and insights into these cutting-edge technologies have positioned Scott as a go-to resource for schools seeking guidance in harnessing the power of AI to transform their admissions and school operations.

Scott embodies a unique blend of business acumen and technical expertise, making him a valuable asset for any admissions team seeking innovative solutions and growth strategies in the ever-evolving landscape of AI and boarding school landscape. 

Arivee Vargas

Arivee Vargas is an award-winning executive coach, former lawyer and Human Resources executive, host of the Humble Rising Podcast, and the author of the bestselling book Your Time To Rise: Unlearn Limiting Beliefs, Unlock Your Power, and Unleash Your Truest Self. With nearly 20 years of legal and corporate executive experience, as a coach and sought-after speaker on burnout, work-life harmony, and personal and leadership development, Arivee guides high-achieving professionals through pivotal life and career crossroads to move forward with more clarity, conviction, fulfillment and higher life satisfaction. Arivee's work has been featured in Oprah Daily, Forbes, Success Magazine, Boston Business Journal, FIERCE by Mitú, and Hispanic Executive Magazine, among others. She is a proud alumna of Boston College and Boston College Law school, and received an honorary degree from Boston College in 2022.

Penny Abrahams

Since 2010, Penny has been an integral part of Independent School Management (ISM), bringing expertise in marketing communications, enrollment management, and advancement to independent schools. At ISM, she:

• Co-leads the Advancement Academy, ISM’s premier annual professional development conference for school leaders, including Heads, Board members, and advancement professionals.
• Provides consulting services to schools in marketing communications, enrollment management, and development.
• Leads workshops and webinars on topics related to school advancement.
• Speaks at national and regional education conferences.
• Contributes regularly to ISM’s flagship publication, Ideas & Perspectives.

Penny’s career in independent schools began at Ravenscroft, a Pre-K through grade 12 school in North Carolina. She served as Annual Fund Director, overseeing all aspects of the school’s annual giving program, before becoming Director of Communications, where she built the school’s communications program from the ground up.

She later served as Director of Admissions & Marketing at Academy at the Lakes, a Pre-K3 through grade 12 school in Florida, where her leadership contributed to record-breaking application and enrollment numbers.

In addition to her professional work, Penny served on the Ravenscroft Board of Trustees for more than six years, holding key leadership positions, including Vice Chair and Chair of both the Audit and Advancement Committees.

Bill Leahy

Bill brings a wealth of boarding school leadership and enrollment management experience and expertise to CS&A, having spent more than three decades at both the collegiate and secondary school levels. A native of New Hampshire, Bill returned to the Granite State in 2016 to serve as Dean of Enrollment at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he served in that position for eight years before joining CS&A.

In addition to his service at Phillips Exeter Academy, Bill served as Global Director of Enrollment Management at Avenues: The World School in New York City.  He also spent eight years at Phillips Academy, Andover, where he served as Director of Admissions from 2008-2015. At Andover, Bill also held the role of President of the Gateway to Prep Schools: the gold standard for independent school collaborative online applications.

Bill began his career at his alma mater, Boston University, where he served as the Assistant Director of Admissions. He then shifted his focus to independent school enrollment management and spent eight years as Associate Director of Admissions at Phillips Academy before serving as Director of Financial Aid & Senior Associate Director of Admission at St. Paul’s School. He then served for six years as Dean of Admissions at The Hotchkiss School.

Charlotte Brownlee

Charlotte Brownlee joined Carney Sandoe & Associates’ Search and Consulting group after 19 years at Cate School in Carpinteria, CA, where she served in a variety of leadership positions, including both the Assistant Head of School for External Affairs and Director of Admissions and Enrollment. Charlotte helped steer Cate’s evolution from a regional school into one of the most selective boarding schools in the country.  She doubled applications, expanded recruitment, designed cohesive admission criteria and strengthened the evaluation process. In collaboration with the Board of Trustees, she refocused the financial assistance program to ensure equity of experience for all students.   She also led Cate’s comprehensive advancement efforts, raising more than $110M despite pandemic-era fundraising challenges, and adding significant endowment for financial assistance, faculty salaries and signature facilities, and successfully completing the largest campaign in school history.

Broadly engaged across the education industry, Charlotte served on the Advisory Board for the National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA) for ten years, on the Gateway to Prep School Board for two terms, and as a faculty member for the Enrollment Management Association’s Admission Training Institute (ATI) for five years.

At CS&A, Charlotte focuses on key administrator searches across all functions and consulting within the Enrollment Management and Advancement practices.

This year's conference and retreat will be held at the Carlsbad Inn and Beach Resort in the gorgeous resort town of Carlsbad, CA. With gorgeous beachside views and a classic beach resort feel, the resort is the perfect place to hone your enrollment management skills and meet other dedicated admissions professionals.

When not in workshops and panels, you'll be able to enjoy the resort's pool and hot tub, the beach, and Carlsbad Village's dazzling array of restaurants.

Carlsbad Village is a vivacious locale that is a hidden gem along San Diego's coastline. There is a variety of waterfront activities, with great local hikes and more within hiking distance. Nearby standouts include:

Your Trip to Carlsbad

Attendees taking air travel should expect to fly into San Diego International  Airport (SAN) or Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). San Diego is much closer to the resort (roughly 35-40 mins) than Los Angeles (roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes.)
