Hawai'i Preparatory Academy
Boarding, Grades 9-12

Founded in 1949, Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy is a co-educational, college-preparatory, day and boarding school that serves kindergarten through 12th grade, plus a postgraduate year. Here on Hawai‘i Island, our students live and study within rare landscapes, precious ecosystems, and a mix of world cultures. We embrace these attributes to create unique signature programs, research partnerships, and growth opportunities that make HPA a school like no other. We exist to empower students with a sense of purpose, and to ensure they have strong core values and the real-world skills to explore and reinvent that purpose over a lifetime. Our core values are:

  • Integrity: living honestly and with moral courage
  • Respect: serving with kindness and responsibility
  • Pursuit of excellence: striving for the highest and best result
  • Wonder: being curious, appreciative, and content

Our core values are part of how we “live aloha.” They help HPA fulfill its mission: to provide exceptional learning opportunities in a diverse community honoring the traditions of Hawai‘i. Through our core values, we make HPA a warm, welcoming, purposeful community where you will grow and be accepted for who you are.

UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS
Capstone Projects
Across our K-12 classes, we incorporate independent projects that let you make learning more active, visible, and fun. Through these projects, HPA prepares you to become a self-driven learner who can conceive, manage, problem-solve, adapt, and communicate your ideas effectively to the public. Along the way, each classroom project builds creative- and critical-thinking skills so that your confidence grows along with your achievements. Throughout the process, your teacher supports and advises you as an expert guide.

Sea Turtle Research
Since 1987, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), HPA students have studied sea turtles in Hawai‘i and many other parts of the world. This is hands-on science at its best! (Middle and Upper Schools)
