Fountain Valley School
Boarding, Grades 9-12
Fountain Valley School is a coed independent college preparatory school that offers day and boarding programs for students in grades 9-12. FVS was established in 1930 and is located on an 1,100 acre campus in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which is 70 miles (115 km) south of Denver. Colorado's mountain ski resorts are two hours to the west, and the School has a 40-acre Mountain Campus near Buena Vista, Colorado that provides abundant opportunities for year-round recreation and experiential education programs.
FVS is a place where you can be you, whatever that looks like, and where you will be a part of a diverse, global community of students and faculty who are deeply committed to learning, yet relaxed in their approach to doing so. You’ll be encouraged to take ownership of your education and empowered to write your own history with our core values of courage, open-mindedness, self-reliance, curiosity, and compassion.
Our broad-based liberal arts approach and dedicated faculty will challenge you through globally-minded inquiry, problem-solving, experiential learning, athletics, and creative expression. Our senior year capstone experiences will allow you to push yourself to the highest level academically or artistically while diving deep into a specific interest or essential question.
Every March, FVS students expand their intellectual, cultural and social horizons beyond the classroom with a week-long departure to locations all over the globe. Some groups stay close to campus and some cross international borders, but all immerse themselves in learning-by-doing journeys. Experiences gained and friendships forged on Interim provide some of the richest memories students carry with them from Fountain Valley.
Climbing & Mountain Sports
Learn to climb as a beginner or advance your skills working with the accomplished coaches who are expert climbers and certified by the Climbing Wall Association. They have proven time and again that they can help put FVS climbers on the podium at state championships. This sport will challenge you mentally just as it does physically—you could say it’s problem-solving with your body.
As a member of the FVS Climbing team, you’ll enjoy the adventure and special camaraderie that climbing fosters. It has a unique vibe and culture. You’ll have teammates shouting encouragement from below while you tackle a route above.
Senior Capstone Project
All seniors participate in our Senior Capstone course during their second semester. This is an exciting opportunity to choose any topic that interests you and immerse yourself in the mechanics of that subject matter. This can be through research on campus, branching out to expert guidance off-campus, or even creating something with your hands. At the end of the course, you’ll share what you’ve learned through a culminating public presentation and in turn, learn from your peers when they present. No matter what you choose, the ability to direct your own learning and share the results will serve you well in college and in life.
